The attached news release provides a description of the Prescribed Fire Training Exchange and outlines possible areas where participants may be involved with prescribed burning projects.  Prior to any specific prescribed burn, we will issue a news release for that project.  This news release is intended to identify possible locations only, as all prescribed burns are dependent on weather and other conditions at the time.

Prescribed Fire Training Exchange Coming to Greater Flagstaff Area

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – For the first time, fire managers from 15 agencies and partners are coming together in northern Arizona to learn and train in prescribed fire through a formal training exchange (TREX). Sponsored by the Fire Learning Network (FLN), TREX is a unique opportunity for fire personnel from across the county to learn about prescribed fire, land management, wildland urban interface, smoke management, and much more.

“This is a critical time to share knowledge, restoration tools, products and ideas across regions” said TREX Incident Commander, Mark Shiery. “Restoring our forests through fire is more timely now than ever before”. This collaborative approach allows sharing of experience and learning across geographies, and improves integrated fire management and conservation practices over time. Other TREX partners include the Arizona Prescribed Fire Council, the Southwest Fire Science Consortium, the Ecological Restoration Institute, and the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council.

Prescribed fire plans for the greater Flagstaff area TREX include lands from the Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park. TREX fire managers will coordinate with neighboring forests, national parks, fire departments, and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to monitor smoke impacts. For more information on smoke and air quality please visit www.azdeq.gov or wildlandfire.az.gov.
