Southeast Alaska Discovery events KETCHIKAN, Alaska–On September 26, 2014, at 6 p.m., the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center will debut
Tracing Roots, a heartfelt portrait of Ketchikan’s master weaver Delores Churchill intertwined with a mystery. The film follows her journey to understand a spruce root hat found in a retreating glacier in the Yukon.
Tracing Roots will provoke discussion of cultural heritage, DNA studies, and whatever else may bubble to the surface in a changing environment. During the event, Delores and the film’s creator, Ellen Frankenstein, will speak briefly and a reception with
live music and refreshments will be provided. The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center will celebrate National Public Lands Day beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 27, 2014. Volunteers will help beautify the center’s native plant garden.
A free barbecue lunch will be provided to all volunteers. The center will be open, free of charge, and there will be special wilderness-themed activities to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act.
National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. It is a celebration of the work, play, and learning that takes place on public lands every
day. The occasion brings together thousands of volunteers from coast to coast to improve and restore the lands and facilities that Americans use for recreation, education, exercise, and just plain enjoyment. Last year, more than 175,000 Americans participated
at more than 2,200 sites in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Eight federal agencies will participate along with more than 250 state, county, and city partners and a host of nonprofit groups.
National Public Lands Day is coordinated by The National Environmental Education Foundation. NEEF is the nation’s leading organization in lifelong environmental learning, connecting people
to knowledge they use to improve the quality of their lives and the health of the planet. NEEF sees a future where by 2022, 300 million Americans actively use environmental knowledge to ensure the well-being of the earth and its people.
