Mud Fire Benefits Area South of Williams

WILLIAMS, AZ – On July 29th, 2013, lightning ignited the Mud Fire approximately 10 miles south of Williams near the Summit Mountain and Little Pine Flat area. Currently 1.4 acres in size, this resource benefit fire is being managed for multiple objectives including reducing accumulated forest litter and fuels, maintaining fire in a fire-adapted ecosystem, increasing firefighter and visitor safety, and protecting cultural resources and wildlife habitat.

Due to recent precipitation, the fire is growing slowly in ponderosa pine and oak with smoldering and creeping fire behavior. “A slight drying trend is predicted throughout the week and we are anticipating slow growth each day” said Fire Management Officer, James Pettit. Fire crews are continually monitoring the fire which is spreading naturally at this time.

Date/Time Reported: Monday July 29th, 2013

Location: 10 miles south of Williams

Cause: Lightning

Size: 1.4 Acres

Smoke impacts should continue to be very minimal, if any, to the areas near Summit Mountain and Little Pine Flat. However, varying monsoonal precipitation and winds are likely to change fire behavior and growth over the next several days. Forecasted winds continue to be west southwest at 5-15 mph with gusts as high as 21 mph.
