Multiple Kaibab National Forest Fires Benefit Resource Objectives

TUSAYAN, AZ. – Multiple lightning caused fires on the North and South Zones of the Kaibab National Forest continue to spread naturally. Fire managers are encouraged by the progress these fires are making reducing forest ground litter and tree stand densities.  Fire management objectives include public and firefighter safety while working to reduce potential smoke impacts around the fire areas.  A short drying trend and a high pressure weather pattern are expected over these fires this week and through the weekend and may result in increased smoke and reduced visibility. Visitors are encouraged to use caution when traveling in these areas, reducing driving speed and watching for fire personnel working along the roads.

These fires are being managed to stay within designated planning areas and to benefit resource objectives that include maintaining fire in a fire-adapted ecosystem and reducing fuel loads. Cooperative interagency fire personnel include: National Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Indian Affairs.
