Secret Fire update – June 17, 8 a.m.

Unless fire behavior changes significantly, the next update will be at approximately 4 p.m.

Firefighters continue to be successful in holding the Silver Fire at approximately 15 acres. This morning it is 40% contained. A portion of the fire is on a very steep slope inaccessible to firefighters; utilizing water drops on that area has been keeping flames from spreading.

Fire behavior is moderate.

Two hotshot crews will remain on scene today – using helicopters when needed – to continue holding and mopping up.

No homes/property are nearby or threatened

Smoke is not visible from Flagstaff or Sedona

Location: A remote area at the edge of the Mogollon Rim and Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness, near Loy Canyon.  As the crow flies, 30 miles southwest of Flagstaff, 10 miles west of Hwy 89A, 15 miles northwest of Sedona.

Start Date: Saturday June 16

Size: approximately 15 acres

Cause: lightning

Landscape: dense forest, steep and rugged terrain

Restrictions: Temporary flight restriction in place. A temporary closure is in place for the fire area – including a portion of the Secret Mountain and Loy Canyon. Signs are posted and patrols are in the area making contact with any visitors.
