Secret Fire update – June 16, 6 p.m. The next update will be at approximately 8 a.m. tomorrow.
Crews were successful in keeping the Secret Fire from growing today. Firefighters and helicopters are still on scene this evening. So far, the containment lines crews created have held, and on the portion of the fire that is on a slope inaccessible to firefighters, water drops have helped moderate fire behavior, keeping flames from spreading.
Warm, dry and windy conditions and steep rough terrain remain a concern for fire managers. Potential still exists for the fire to move into Loy Canyon where slopes and "funnel-like" terrain could fuel fire behavior.
Size remains at 15 acres, 0% containment. Smoke is not visible from Flagstaff or Sedona
Location: A remote area at the edge of the Mogollon Rim and Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness, near Loy Canyon. As the crow flies, 30 miles southwest of Flagstaff, 10 miles west of Hwy 89A, 15 miles northwest of Sedona Start Date: Saturday June 16 Size: approximately 15 acres Cause: lightning-caused Landscape: dense forest, steep and rugged terrain.
No homes/property are nearby or threatened
Restrictions: Temporary flight restriction in place. A temporary closure is in place for the fire area – including a portion of the Secret Mountain and Loy Canyon trails – are temporary in place. Signs are posted and patrols are in the area making contact with any visitors. This is a remote location that’s not highly used by the public.
