Crews responding to lightning-caused Secret Fire

The next update will be at approximately 6 p.m.  Map and photo can be viewed on our website at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/news-events/?cid=STELPRDB5424426

Location: A remote area at the edge of the Mogollon Rim and Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness, near Loy Canyon.  As the crow flies, 30 miles southwest of Flagstaff, 10 miles west of Hwy 89A, 15 miles northwest of Sedona

Behavior: High yesterday, low to moderate today following quick and aggressive response yesterday with air and ground resources.

Start Date: Saturday June 16

Size: approximately 15 acres

Cause: lightning-caused

Landscape: dense forest, steep and rugged terrain.

No homes/property are nearby or threatened

Restrictions: Temporary flight restriction in place. A temporary closure is in place for the fire area – including a portion of the Secret Mountain and Loy Canyon trails – are temporary in place. Signs are posted and patrols are in the area making contact with any visitors. This is a remote location that’s not highly used by the public.

Resources: Approximately 80 personnel assigned including three hotshot crews, air tanker, helitanker, and light helicopter. Yesterday, fire managers utilized the DC-10 Very Large Air Tanker

Response: Though fire behavior is moderate and relatively small, firefighters are facing warm/dry/windy conditions and steep, rugged terrain that could contribute to increased fire behavior. Thus, fire managers have been responding aggressively since initial response, including utilizing air support from an air tanker, the DC-10 Very Large Air Tanker, type 3 helicopter, heavy helitanker, and air attack. On the ground resources include three hotshot crews.

So far, firefighters have been keeping fire growth to a minimum. This afternoon will be telling as we approach the warmest part of the day. Firefighters will focus on keeping fire out of Loy Canyon.
