Kaibab National Forest Prepares forCity Southeast Prescribed Fire
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire crews are preparing to implement the 1,785-acre City Southeast Prescribed Fire on the Williams Ranger District, Oct. 22 & 23. The project area is two miles southeast of Williams, east of County Road 73 and west of Dogtown Lake. Operations will be a combination of hand and aerial ignitions. There will be an increase in traffic as fire crews travel to and from the burn area on roads near the project. Forest visitors are advised to avoid camping or hunting in and around the unit. The goals of the prescribed fire program are reducing hazardous fuel accumulation, decreasing the risk of high intensity wildfire, and protecting communities. Many factors are evaluated before the burn begins including current and predicted weather, fuel moisture and the availability of personnel and equipment. Crews will conduct the burn if conditions are met and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request. The forecast is calling for southwest winds early next week. Smoke will be visible from Williams, I-40 and various areas around the forest. If you have any questions please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, at 928-635-5653. – USFS –
