Prescribed Fires on the Kaibab National Forest

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest managers are monitoring and evaluating conditions for the opportunity to conduct prescribed fires on the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts over the next seven days.

The general forecast shows dry conditions and light winds for northern Arizona which could create favorable conditions to implement the burns. Fire crews are planning the following projects:

·         Wednesday, Oct. 17, Tusayn South (119 acres), two miles south of Tusayan

·         Thursday, Oct. 18, Flying J, (167 acres), two miles southwest of Tusayan

·         Friday, Oct. 19, Pineaire, (223 acres), near Maine Consolidated School, Parks

·         Monday, Oct. 22, City Southeast, (1,800 acres), aerial and hand ignitions, three miles southeast of Williams

Fire crews implement, monitor, and patrol each project to ensure it meets the goals and objectives outlined in prescribed fire plans. The ignition of all burns is dependent on the availability of personnel and equipment, appropriate environmental conditions, and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) approval. Forest officials coordinate with the ADEQ before and during prescribed burns in order to manage smoke production and minimize impacts as much as possible.

Prescribed burns are used to improve forest health, reduce hazardous fuels, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.  Maps and updates will be posted on http://www.inciweb.org. For additional information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
