The Flagstaff Fire Department’s Wildland Fire Management Division is planning to conduct three prescribed broadcast burns in the next seven days.  Forecast weather conditions are expected to bring favorable conditions for implementation of these burns.  The current drying trend and expected winds will likely result in desirable conditions to meet burn objectives.  Objectives include: reducing the risk of severe wildfire by reducing hazardous fuel accumulations; reinvigorating native plant species and promoting overall forest health by cycling nutrients back into the soil; and helping reintroduce fire into our fire adapted and fire dependent forest ecosystem.

Burns are being planned at the following locations.

•Thursday October 18th – City Reservoir (26 acres) North Flagstaff near the junction of Schultz Pass Rd                 and Mt Elden Lookout Rd.

•Monday October 22nd – City Well Field (121 acres) 3 miles southwest of Flagstaff off FR 533

•Wednesday October 24th – Camp Navajo Army Depot (115 acres) 12 miles west of Flagstaff and south of                 Bellemont

The listed dates are tentative and all burn activities are dependent upon the arrival of expected weather conditions, available resources and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

Please call the Flagstaff Fire Department at (928) 213-2500 with any questions.

Additional prescribed fire information can be obtained from the USFS Prescribed Fire Hotline at (928) 226-4607.
