Pile Burning Planned for Williams Ranger District

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire crews are making plans to burn slash piles on the Williams Ranger District Thursday, October 6. Crews may ignite 215 acres of piles approximately 3 miles southeast of Williams and north of Dogtown Lake pending Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approval and appropriate weather conditions.

Managers expect smoke to travel northeast of the units and settle in low-lying areas overnight. Smoke may be visible from Williams, Woods Subdivision, County Road 73, and Dogtown Lake.

Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. Burning the piles returns important nutrients to the soil, completing fire’s regenerative cycle. Thinning and pile burning are part of an ongoing effort to improve forest health and reduce hazardous fuels.
