Prescribed Burning on the Kaibab National Forest
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest managers are monitoring and evaluating conditions for the opportunity to conduct prescribed fires on the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts next week.
The general forecast shows a drying trend returning to northern Arizona which could create favorable conditions. Fire crews are considering the following projects:
·
City Southeast, (1,800 acres), three miles southeast of Williams
·
Spring Valley, (176 acres), eight miles north of Parks
·
Kendrick, (1,400 acres), 16 miles northeast of Williams
·
Scott, (1,400 acres), eight miles southeast of Tusayan
Prescribed burns are used to improve forest health, reduce hazardous fuels, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.
In order to manage smoke production and minimize impacts as much as possible, forest officials coordinate with the National Weather Service and Arizona Department
of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) before and during prescribed burns.
The ignition of all burns is dependent on the availability of personnel and equipment, favorable environmental conditions, and ADEQ approval. Fire crews implement, monitor, and patrol each project
to ensure it meets the goals and objectives outlined in prescribed fire plans.
