Prescribed Fire Planned on Tusayan Ranger District

TUSAYAN, Ariz. - Fire managers plan to implement the Scott Prescribed Fire on the Tusayan Ranger District beginning Tuesday Oct. 4. There are two units planned for ignition that cover approximately 1,400 acres.

One unit is on the east side of the Skinner Fire which occurred earlier this year, about seven miles southeast of Tusayan. The other unit starts near the Grandview Lookout Tower and extends five miles south and east next to the Arizona Trail. The Arizona Trail is being used as a containment line on this burn block. Trail users are advised to detour off the trail onto Forest Road 310 near the junction of  roads 310 and 317, and reconnect to the trail at the Lookout Tower. There will be advisory signs posted on the Arizona Trail.

Managers are evaluating a set of parameters that need to be met in order to start the burn. These factors include fuel moisture, temperature, humidity, wind, and ventilation. If conditions are appropriate and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request, crews may begin burning Tuesday, continuing through the week.

Forest fire crews will implement, monitor, and patrol the project to ensure it meets objectives outlined in the prescribed burn plan. Prescribed burns are used to improve forest health, enhance wildlife habitat, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.

A map of the project is posted on the Inciweb at http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1878/  For more information, please contact Punky Moore (928-635-5653).
