Good Afternoon- Prescribed Fire Planned Two Miles Southeast of Williams WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire specialists are preparing to implement the City Southeast Prescribed Fire on the Williams Ranger District beginning Tuesday, Oct. 4.
The 1,800-acre unit is a Wildland Urban Interface protection project, two miles southeast of Williams and east of the junction of County Road 73 and Forest Road 140.
This prescribed burn was previously scheduled for September but plans were canceled after enough precipitation fell on the unit that objectives would not have been met if the burn had been implemented.
Objectives include improving forest health and reducing the potential for high-intensity wildland fire within the project area, the City of Williams, and its watershed.
Implementation is contingent upon Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approval and appropriate environmental conditions. The forecast shows a chance of thunderstorms returning to northern
Arizona this weekend which could affect whether the burn takes place. Managers plan to use aerial ignitions on this project. Ignitions may last one to two days. Smoke will be present for several days after the burn.
This advance notice is given to smoke sensitive people and forest visitors planning to travel, camp, or hunt near the project area. For more information, please contact Punky Moore (928-635-5653).
