Two Fires on Tusayan Ranger District now

Managed as the Skinner Complex

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Tusayan Ranger District officials have decided to manage two fires, Armstrong and Skinner, under one organization called the Skinner Complex. The decision was made to boost the organization and add several positions based on the potential for consistent fire growth and the number of resources that may be required to manage them.

Goals and objectives have not changed for the incidents. The highest priority remains firefighter and public safety. The resource objectives for the Complex include returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, enhancing wildlife habitat and protecting private property, cultural and range resources.

The Armstrong Fire is 822 acres; about 18 miles southeast of Tusayan and north of Red Horse Wash. Approximately 40 personnel are working on the fire as it continues moving north and east within a designated 9,300-acre area.

The Skinner Fire is about 2 acres, eight miles southeast of Tusayan near Skinner Ridge. The 8,000-acre area defined for the incident is beginning to dry out after several days of rain and increased activity is expected.

The Armstrong and Skinner Fires are burning within Game Management Unit 9. Forest visitors are advised to avoid camping near the fires. If you are traveling on the district, please slow down, use caution, and watch for fire crews and equipment.

The general forecast calls for better ventilation today. Hazy conditions prevailed across the region yesterday due to wind, dust, dirt, and smoke from many fires around northern Arizona.  Smoke from the Skinner Complex will be visible from areas across the district and along portions of Highway 64 and Highway 180. Smoke has been settling in Red Horse Wash and the Woodland Ranch Road area overnight.
