Pile Burning Planned for
Williams Ranger District

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – The recent moisture across the forest is providing an opportunity for fire managers to burn slash piles this week on the Williams Ranger District. If conditions are appropriate and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the requests, firefighters may ignite in two locations on the district.
1) Approximately 25 acres of piles near J.D. Dam, 12 miles southeast of Williams, Wednesday. 2) About 100 acres of piles, 3 miles northwest of Williams near Holden Lake, Thursday or Friday. This 100-acre unit will be burned in small blocks as conditions allow.
The forecasted weather shows a chance of showers until Wednesday then slightly drier conditions thru the week. Smoke is expected to drift northeast of the project areas. Personnel will monitor and patrol the piles to ensure fire does not spread into the surrounding vegetation.
Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. The goals of thinning and pile burning are to reduce fire hazard and return important nutrients to the soil. For more information about prescribed burning, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
