Bolt Fire update, July 25

Flagstaff, AZ – Activity on the Bolt Fire northeast of Munds Park increased over the weekend, progressing steadily across the landscape. Crews applied fire in strategic locations to secure boundaries and maintain low to moderate fire spread within the identified management area for each incident.

The majority of smoke continues to disperse very well during the day; residual smoke drifts toward Munds Park and Sedona overnight. Fire managers are expecting activity to decrease over the next several days with increased moisture in the forecast.

Bolt Fire Facts
Behavior: Short flame lengths and steady movement across the forest floor.
Start Date: July 11, 2011
Location: Approximately 6 miles northeast of Munds Park, off Forest Road 132A
Size: 1,300 acres
Closures: There are no road closures at this time, but travelers in the area should be cautious of smoke, fire crews, and equipment.

Objectives for this fires include restoring fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, reducing hazardous fuels, protecting and enhancing wildlife habitat, and improving overall forest health.  Fire recycles nutrients into the soil, promoting the growth of grasses and other healthy vegetation, and reduces accumulated fuels that could lead to more intense fire under drier conditions.
