Slow Growth on Parallel and Woodbridge Fires

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Over the weekend, two fires grew slowly on the Tusayan Ranger District. The Parallel Fire is reported at 3 acres, nine miles southeast of Tusayan. The Woodbridge Fire is 11 acres and 18 miles east of Tusayan on the Coconino Rim. Observed fire behavior was mainly smoldering and creeping across the landscape.

Officials have decided to use these fires to achieve resource objectives on the Tusayan Ranger District. Identifed objectives include returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, improving forest health, and protecting wildlife habitat, cultural resources and range improvements.

Nick Larson, Tusayan District Ranger stated, “A comprehensive plan for managing the fires has been developed that addresses resource and environmental concerns and outlines the specific actions that will be taken as fire approaches certain areas.” To date, actions have been taken to secure the northern edge of the management area for the Woodbridge Fire and to prepare fire sensitive sites for anticipated growth. Firefighters are also engaged in monitoring and documenting fire progression and smoke production.

Resources assigned to the incidents include approximately 24 personnel, several engines, and the Kaibab water tender.

Monday morning, the Red Butte fire lookout reported minimal smoke impacts in the area. Fire activity and smoke production is expected to increase this week depending on the weather, fuels, and terrain. If you are traveling on the Tusayan Ranger District, please be cautious of personnel and equipment working in the area.   For additional information, please contact Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, (928-635-5653).                  -USFS-
