Parallel and Woodbridge Fires will be Managed for Resource Objectives

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Since the onset of the monsoons, lightning has sparked several fires on the Forest. Officials have decided to use two of these fires to achieve resource objectives on the Tusayan Ranger District. The Parallel Fire (1 acre) is nine miles southeast of Tusayan and northeast of Red Butte. The Woodbridge Fire (1 acre) is 18 miles east of Tusayan on the Coconino Rim.

When personnel initially responded to these fires, they placed them in monitor status instead of containing and controlling them.  Upon further evaluation, officials determined the two fires had potential to meet several resource management objectives. Therefore, a plan was developed and approved to manage the fires.

The first priority in any incident is firefighter and public safety. Further objectives for these incidents are protecting wildlife habitat, range improvements, and cultural resources as well as returning fire to its proper role in a fire-adapted ecosystem.

Boundaries have been established where the fires will be managed over the coming weeks. As long as the objectives continue to be met, the Parallel Fire will be managed within 4,300 acres and the Woodbridge within 3,000 acres. As the fires progress, actions will be implemented to keep them within the management areas.

Fire activity is expected to increase depending on the weather, fuels, and terrain. Warm temperatures and moderate winds are forecasted Saturday with a chance of showers Sunday. Smoke may be visible from time to time across the District and from State Highway 64.
