Pile Burning Planned Monday on Tusayan Ranger District
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers plan to burn slash piles Monday, Feb. 28 on the Tusayan Ranger District. Approximately 6 piles are available for burning northwest of Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan. (T30N, R2E, S 23)
Recent moisture on the piles has produced favorable conditions for burning. Ignition will occur if Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request. The weather forecast shows fair weather and light south winds early next week.
Smoke may be visible in Tusayan and along State Highway 64. Smoke may settle overnight in Coconino Wash.
Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. Thinning and pile burning are part of an ongoing effort to reduce hazardous fuels near communities and improve forest health. For more information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
