Pile Burning Planned on Tusayan Ranger District

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers plan to burn slash piles Tuesday, Feb. 1 on the Tusayan Ranger District. Approximately 60 acres of piles are available for burning west of Highway 64 about five miles south of Tusayan (T29N, R2E, Sec. 12 & 13.)

Ignition of the piles will occur if Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request and favorable conditions exist. The weather forecast shows light north winds Tuesday.

Smoke may be visible in Tusayan, Grand Canyon National Park and along State Highway 64. Smoke may settle overnight in Little Red Horse Wash.

Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. Thinning and pile burning are part of an ongoing effort to reduce hazardous fuels near communities and improve forest health. For more information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
