Crews conducting prescribed pile burns South today
Flagstaff, AZ – Coconino NF fire managers are will be conducting planning prescribed pile burns off Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3) today. Piles are part of the Mountainaire Project and are located north of Lake Mary Meadows, just south of Lake Mary Road, off Forest Road 187. These are large piles and smoke will be noticeable during ignition. Winds will help it disperse to the northeast, however, some residual smoke will likely drift southerly.
In addition, crews are burning 10 acres of smaller piles south of Townsend-Winona Road, north of I-40 in the Turkey Hills area – part of the Eastside Project. Smoke will be light and will move to the northeast with the winds. Piles should be completely consumed by the day’s end, leaving little residual smoke.
Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.
All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
