Prescribed pile burns around Flagstaff today

Flagstaff, AZ – The Coconino National Forest, Flagstaff Fire Department and the Bear Jaw Fire and Fuels Module (made of Pinewood, Highlands, and Summit fire departments) – all partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council – are each conducting prescribed pile burns in the Flagstaff area today. Today’s weather is providing good ventilation and winds that will help smoke disperse quickly.

The Coconino National Forest is burning piles on the Kachina and Mountainaire projects (legal coordinates T19, R7, S7 and T20, R7, S13&14). Approximately 30 acres of piles are being ignited south of Kachina Village and the Kelly Canyon Exit, just west of I-17. Another 250 acres of piles is located east of Mountainaire, south west of Lake Mary Road. Some residual smoke may be noticeable near Lake Mary Road and the immediate area over night, but should be light. Contact the Flagstaff Ranger District at 928-526-0866 with questions.

The Bear Jaw Fire and Fuels Module will be conducting a 5 acre pile burn east of Flagstaff and south of Townsend -Winona  (legal coordinates T21, R9, S6 SW ¼). Smoke will be minimal and is only expected to last through the day. If there are any concerns or questions please call 928-525-1717 ext.1155.

The Flagstaff Fire Department's Wildland Fire Crew plans to conduct a 10 acre prescribed pile burn on the west side of town.  Piles are located just west of Flagstaff Ranch Road and South of Interstate 40 (T21, R6, S24).   These piles are small hand piles which will be closely monitored to ensure good consumption and reduced smoke impact.  If there are any questions regarding planned ignitions please contact the Flagstaff Fire Department Fuel Management at 928-853-2735.
