Williams Ranger District Pile Burning

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers are requesting approval to burn slash piles Thursday, December 16 on the Williams Ranger District. If appropriate conditions exist and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request, approximately 40 acres of piles may be ignited about four miles southeast of Williams near Dogtown Lake.

Managers expect smoke to travel northeast of the project and settle in low-lying areas overnight. Smoke may be visible from Williams, County Road 73, Dogtown Lake and surrounding locations. The current moist conditions will help prevent fire from spreading into vegetation around the piles.

Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. Burning the piles returns important nutrients to the soil, completing fire’s regenerative cycle. The goals of thinning and pile burning are to reduce fire hazard and protect communities.
