Prescribed burns this week

Flagstaff, AZ – Pending favorable weather and conditions, fire managers have several prescribed fire projects in queue this week.

For today, the Mountainaire and Upper Beaver Creek projects have been approved by ADEQ. Before actually igniting this morning, fire managers will be assessing conditions on the ground such as winds and fuel moistures. If conditions are favorable, crews will move forward with ignition.
Upper Beaver Creek, 1000 acres west of Lake Mary Rd near Stoneman Lake Road. Winds must be blowing from the west for this burn to take place; smoke would disperse to the east, though some residual smoke would settle toward Beaver Creek and the Rimrock area overnight.
Mountainaire, 1000 acres southeast of Flagstaff, east of I-17 and of Mountainaire. Smoke will disperse to the northeast during the day. Overnight, residual smoke will likely settle around I-17 and Mountainaire as well as the Heckethorne area off Lake Mary Road.

In addition to Upper Beaver Creek and Mountainaire, crews may also plan prescribed fires on the following projects the remainder of the week:
Woody Ridge, southwest of Flagstaff in the vicinity of Woody Mountain Road
East Side, east of Flagstaff and Country Club on Campbell Mesa, between Old Walnut Canyon Road and I-40
Oak Creek Canyon, slash piles located off Hwy 89A, north of Sedona

Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
