Kaibab Lake Campground To Undergo Improvements Over Next Several Months

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab Lake Campground on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest is scheduled to undergo major improvements over the next several months, which will likely mean the popular campground will not open for summer 2011.

Improvements to the campground, which is located about 4 miles northeast of Williams off of state Route 64, include new pavement, new parking spurs, new campsite amenities such as fire rings and picnic tables, more day-use parking for improved fishing access, additional day-use picnic sites, improved ramadas, additional small-group capacity, and a new camping loop with an additional 10 to 15 campsites.

In addition to these planned improvements, the entrance road to Kaibab Lake Campground has also recently been improved.

“Kaibab Lake Campground is one of our most popular campgrounds due to its convenient location near the intersection of Interstate 40 and state Route 64, just 60 miles from Grand Canyon National Park,” said Deirdre McLaughlin, recreational forester.  “While the campground will probably not be able to open for the summer season of 2011, we are very excited about all the new amenities that will be available after the reconstruction.”

Even though the campground will not be open for overnight camping until the reconstruction project is complete, the lake itself will remain open for day-use from dawn until dusk daily.  The only exception will be rare, short-term closures when heavy construction activity is occurring.

“We know this lake is an important recreation destination for our local communities,” McLaughlin said.  “That’s why we intend to keep the lake open for day-use as consistently as possible throughout the reconstruction process.  If we do have to close the whole area temporarily, we will give advance notice and reopen as quickly as possible.”

L P’s Excavating out of Williams is doing the reconstruction work, which will likely not be completed until late 2011.  For people visiting the Williams Ranger District while Kaibab Lake Campground is closed, other nearby campgrounds are available.

Ten-X Campground on the Tusayan Ranger District is located just 4 miles south of Grand Canyon National Park immediately off of state Route 64.  Seventy spacious campsites are available on a first- come, first-served basis.  RVs up to 40 feet can be accommodated.  Detailed information about Ten-X Campground can be found at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/kaibab/ten-x.

Another option for visitors to the Williams area is Dogtown Lake Campground, which is located about 6.5 miles southeast of Williams.  Detailed information about Dogtown Lake Campground can be found at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/kaibab/dogtown_lake.

Finally, White Horse Lake Campground, which is about 19 miles southeast of Williams, has 94 single-unit campsites, of which 44 can be reserved in advance through the National Recreation Reservation System at www.recreation.gov.  For additional information about White Horse Lake Campground, please visit www.fs.usda.gov/goto/kaibab/white_horse.
