Tentative Prescribed Fire Plans for the Week of September 27

Flagstaff, AZ – Pending favorable conditions, fire specialists on the Coconino National Forest are tentatively planning prescribed burns on a few projects across the forest next week.

Fire Managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods with the need to minimize smoke impacts to communities.  The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the other partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (including local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests. All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

For Monday, September 27
Woody Ridge Project – 200 acres in one of two locations in the project area: either off Woody Mountain Road near Rogers Lake, or southwest of Fort Tuthill. Smoke will move northeast and will be visible from Flagstaff. Residual smoke will settle toward Oak Creek Canyon overnight.

The remainder of the week, crews may also ignite on the following projects:
Blue Ridge Urban Interface – off Hwy 87 near the community of Blue Ridge
Fort Valley Project – North of Flagstaff off Hwy 180 and Snowbowl Road
A-1 Project – east of Bellemonte, south of Baderville
Kachina Project – South of Flagstaff, east of I-17, near Mountainaire
Mint Project – South of Mormon Lake off Lake Mary Road
