Hobble Fire Update

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – The Hobble Fire continues to spread 18 miles northeast of Williams. The fire is approximately 1,267 acres.  The lighting-caused fire started August 30 and is being managed for resource objectives within a 58,000-acre area near the Hobble Mountains on the Kaibab National Forest.

Today, personnel assigned to the incident observed a low intensity burn through the ponderosa pine.  There is occasional torching when the fire reaches clusters of pinyon-juniper trees. The fire is primarily moving southwest in the Hobble Natural tank drainage and southeast toward Sheep Hill.

Fire managers have identified certain locations, called management action points, where they will take measures to slow or redirect fire spread to continue to meet the resource objectives set forth for the incident.  These objectives include returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, providing for firefighter and public safety, reducing accumulated debris, and improving wildlife habitat.

Game Management Unit 7W is within the Hobble Fire Management Area.  All roads are open and accessible.  If you are planning to camp in this area, please be aware that the fire has the potential to become more active as fuels continue to dry. It may be necessary to move your camp if fire activity increases.

The forecast shows a drying trend Saturday through Monday with above normal temperatures and light winds. Managers expect fire activity to increase moderately under these conditions. Smoke may be noticeable from State Highway 64, Valle, and along portions of Highway 180.
