Prescribed Burning Planned on Williams Ranger District
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab fire managers plan to conduct prescribed burns on the Williams Ranger District beginning Monday Sept. 20. The projects will be implemented if conditions are appropriate and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the requests.
First, crews plan to ignite the Northeast Freeway prescribed fire Monday, Sept. 20. This 300-acre burn is east of Williams, just south of I-40, north of Route 66 and southwest of Highway 64. Later in the week, crews may burn approximately 250 acres of the Frenchy project, eight miles east of Williams near Sherwood Forest Estates.
Crews will use drip torches to ignite the units. Operations will begin early in the morning to allow for maximum smoke dispersal. There will be smoke on roads and highways near the burns and in surrounding areas overnight. Please use caution driving through these project areas.
These prescribed fires are part of an ongoing program to reduce hazardous fuels near communities and improve forest health. Fire crews implement, monitor, and patrol each project to ensure it meets the goals and objectives outlined in our prescribed burn plans.
