Tentative Prescribed Fire Plans for the Week of September 20

Flagstaff, AZ – Fire managers cancelled the Fort Valley prescribed burn this past Wednesday and closed down activity on the Weir Fire near Stoneman Lake. Skies should be clear of smoke for the weekend festivities including soccer tournaments and Pickin’ in the Pines.

For next week, pending favorable conditions, fire specialists on the Coconino National Forest are tentatively planning prescribed burns on a few projects across the forest.

For Monday, September 20
Fort Valley Project – approximately 300 acres off Snowbowl Road and Hwy 180, north of Flagstaff. Predicted winds will move the majority of smoke to the northeast through Shultz Pass; it will be noticeable east of Flagstaff. Residual smoke will likely settle in Fort Valley area overnight. “Conducting prescribed burns near town is challenging because while we recognize the need to minimize smoke impacts to the community, it is critical that we reduce the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods,” Says Vic Morfin, Coconino National Forest Fuels Manager. “The Fort Valley project is almost complete this season. We appreciate the community support and patience.”

The remainder of the week, crews may also ignite on the East Clear Creek Project, east of Blue Ridge Reservoir, south of Hwy 87.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
