Prescribed fire planned this week

Flagstaff, AZ –Fire managers are planning a prescribed fire for Thursday and Friday, pending favorable conditions.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather, ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

Mogollon Rim District
Bar T Bar Project – up to 3000 acres to be ignited on Thursday and Friday.  Location is a remote area near the forest boundary about 18 miles northeast of Clints Well, 6 miles east of Highway 87 near Red Hill and East Clear Creek. The objective of this burn is to maintain and enhance grassland ecosystem. Crews will first burn perimeter lines in the morning, and then ignite the interior. Fire will burn quickly through the grasses and understory, mimicking fire’s natural cycle. Increased humidity and monsoon moisture is forecast in the days following this treatment. Hot, dry conditions are necessary for this use of prescribed fire to stimulate grass growth and eradicate encroaching juniper trees. Smoke may be visible from Highway 87, but will quickly disperse by nightfall.
