City Project Implementation

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Forest crews are making progress on the thinning and piling phase of the City Project near Cataract Lake. The project includes vegetative treatment activities on 138 acres on the Williams Ranger District.

One phase of the project was accomplished by a broadcast prescribed burn in the fall of 2008. Now, the activities underway include thinning and piling in three different areas around Cataract Lake. The slash piles will not be burned until they have cured and significant precipitation is received. Public notification will be made when the slash piles are scheduled to be burned.

Project objectives include returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, increasing flora and fauna diversity and improving forest health.

Kaibab National Forest personnel led a field trip to the Cataract Lake area in June to explain the objectives of the project.

Please be advised of personnel and equipment working around Cataract Lake and use caution traveling thru the area. For more information, please call Richard Gonzalez, Project Leader, 928-635-5616.
