Eagle Rock Fire Update, 6/18/10, 9:00 p.m.

WILLIAMS, AZ – Friday was another productive day for firefighters on the Eagle Rock Fire.  The fire remains at approximately 3,400 acres and is now 40% contained.

Almost all evacuated residents have been allowed to return to their homes.  A portion of the Spring Valley Road (141) remains closed due to fire activity.  In addition, there is an Emergency Fire Closure around the immediate fire perimeter.  Specifics of that closure may be found at http://inciweb.org/incident/1989/.

A public meeting was held Friday night in Parks with over 80 in attendance.  Fire officials explained the strategy employed in the suppression effort and answered questions from those in attendance.

There are 533 personnel currently assigned to the fire including sixteen twenty-person crews, nineteen fire engines and four helicopters. Two air tankers and one Lead Plane are on standby for tomorrow.

Saturday’s plan calls for continued building of fire lines as well as burning out as needed, and mop-up.

The Eagle Rock Fire is located approximately 11 miles northeast of Williams, northeast of Sitgreaves Mountain. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be lightning.

Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District is closed to boating due to fire operations.  The east side of the lake is closed to fishing.  However, it remains open for camping.

For more information, please check Inciweb at http://inciweb.org/incident/1989/. Fire Information lines are being staffed 6 am to 8 pm: 928-635-5687, 928-635-5688.
