Eagle Rock Fire Update, 6/18/10, 12p.m.

WILLIAMS, AZ  –  Fire suppression continues today on the Eagle Rock Fire 11 miles northeast of Williams.  Firefighters made more progress on extinguishing hotspots and improving fire line during
the evening hours.  Structure protection is still in place for many residences in areas of Spring Valley.
Strengthening existing containment lines and constructing direct line along the SW flank of the fire will
be the focus today.

Almost all evacuees have been allowed to return home.  County Road141 remains closed to the public between mile 8 and mile 10.  Some residents remain out of their homes where fire crews are mopping up.  Residents may access their properties via Highway 64 and Spring Valley Road.

A community meeting is scheduled this evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Maine Consolidated School in Parks.  On hand to answer questions will be Incident Commander for the Eagle Rock Fire, John Philbin, as well others members of the Northern Arizona Type 2 Incident Management Team, and representatives from the Kaibab National Forest and Coconino County.

An emergency fire closure order became effective June 17, 2010 around the fire area.  This order is necessary for the protection of the public and firefighters due to ongoing wildfire and fire suppression activities.

Over three hundred personnel are currently assigned to the fire including nine engines, two dozers, four water tenders, and four helicopters. Two air tankers and one Lead Plane are on standby if needed.

Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District is closed to boating due to fire operations.  The east side of the lake is closed to fishing.  However, it remains open for camping.
