Agriculture Secretary Vilsack and NRCS Chief White Host National Media Conference Call to Announce Efforts to Reduce Greenhouse Gases and Help Develop Environmental Markets
WASHINGTON, June 8, 2011— TODAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will announce funding for nine large-scale greenhouse gas reduction projects in 24 states through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG). These projects seek to demonstrate how farmers can reduce greenhouse gases while also developing markets to compensate farmers for their stewardship activities.
In addition to the CIG funding, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will announce additional funding through its Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to eligible producers to implement conservation practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. NRCS Chief Dave White will join Secretary Vilsack on the media conference call to make the announcements.
The states receiving CIG funding include: Arkansas, California, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Oklahoma, Florida, Idaho, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington.
CIG, a component of EQIP, stimulates development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies. NRCS uses CIG to invest in innovative, on-the-ground conservation technologies and approaches with the goal of wide-scale adoption to address water quality and quantity, air quality, energy conservation, and environmental markets, among other natural resource issues. Grants are awarded to state and local governments, federally-recognized Indian tribes, non-governmental organizations and individuals.
