Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to Speak at National Press Club on Global Food Security Ahead of G-20 Agricultural Ministerial in Paris
Will Discuss the Importance of Open, Transparent Markets and Advancing Global Agricultural Productivity
WASHINGTON, June 8, 2011—On MONDAY, JUNE 13, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will speak at a National Press Club luncheon in advance of attending the G-20 Summit of Agricultural Ministers in Paris on June 23. Vilsack will discuss how the continued innovation and creativeness of scientists, farmers and policy-makers is essential to confront the combined challenges of feeding a growing global population, mitigating the effects of climate change, and meeting increasing energy demands at home and abroad. The Secretary will also address the importance of maintaining open, transparent markets for trading food and agricultural goods, as well as address misconceptions about the production of U.S. biofuels. According to the United Nations, the number of hungry people in the world topped one billion in 2009 due to rising food prices and the global economic recession. The June 23 summit in Paris will be the first meeting of the G-20 agriculture ministers. Focus of the G-20 expects to be on high food and commodity prices and the need to produce more food to feed a rapidly growing global population.
