This is more specifically what I needed, although I haven't yet had the opportunity to explore either of these options. Thanks to all who offered suggestions (Nik, deloptes, Mike, ...? I hope I didn't miss anybody). It is all grist for the mill, and I can learn new things, even when they are not exactly the right solution. Things are now back to normal here, at least regarding my machine. As for life in California, especially in San Francisco, it is hard to say what is "normal"; but at least the weather is not so terrible. This so-called Pineapple Express is bad news.
