Hi Michele,
since it automagically switched to the new functionality, the whole layout
switching stops working. I still don't know why, but it is annoying. 
I work around this as following. Whenever it stops working, I disable/enable
the keyboard layouts (I guess the applets backend gets restarted).
As you were overseeing the changes, can you advise how and where to debug?

Perhaps Petr can try next time and tell us if this is also the case on his
end with the multimedia keys.
