Hi Michele, since it automagically switched to the new functionality, the whole layout switching stops working. I still don't know why, but it is annoying. I work around this as following. Whenever it stops working, I disable/enable the keyboard layouts (I guess the applets backend gets restarted). As you were overseeing the changes, can you advise how and where to debug?
