I don't remember what you use for a distribution but I have the feeling that 
most desktops (and *many* applications) simply rely on gnomish material.

Maybe building something like Gentoo from scratch could give a base system 
totaly Gnome-free - I don't know.

So the question is - is there a really good reason to try to avoid them 
competely (no troll, just a question). As far as I am concerned I am happy if 
they don't mess with my system in a way I feel.
