First off, I never had the "Display Manager section missing" problem, so I only can assume it's some screw up with the control module installation.

Now, to get the classic TDM look you *do* install tdmtheme (because this is the easiest way). A new section should appear in TCC labeled something like "TDM Theme Manager". There, if I recall correctly, you have to disable themes for TDM and that's it.
