I tried changing that, but 

xdg-settings set default-url-scheme-handler mailto kmail.desktop 

did not produce any effect, neither as user nor as root (and yes, I did create 
a kmail.desktop file).

My dirty workaround for now was to 
backup /usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop, then edit that file and 
put /opt/trinity/bin/kmail.desktop unstead of the thunderbird link.

Not very clean, but it does work.
