Is this a new thread?

FWIW I did a clean re-install when I switched from Slackware to Redhat
more than twenty years ago and then again when I switched from Fedora
Core to Ubuntu.

Since then, other than when buying new hardware, I've updated in place
including switching from Ubuntu to Debian to Devuan and back to Debian,
and including changes from i386 to amd64 and then to amd64+i386.

Crossgrades are not supported but if you test out a working path in advance
on a cheap VPS they're certainly do-able.
