And you've been provided stories in response - that those who stayed
in the end have seen the error of their ways and changed what they did,
or did not mind Linus' cursing (even if in retrospective). And how
it affected the quality of code. And that it was /rarely if ever/
a personal attack in their opinion.

This is not a democracy, Linus is a BDFL ;)

Not everybody's 'ego filter' can be passed with a smiley.
/Sometimes/ it needs to be rammed. Do we need rules to say when it
should be? Maybe.
Do you expect Linus and the Lieutenants to say:

NAK DISCLAIMER: YOUR SUBMISSION AFFECTS QUALITY OF KERNEL/SUBSYSTEM
CODE IN NEGATIVE WAY AND WILL HAVE UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCES /
HAS NOT BEEN TESTED ENOUGH, SO WE REFUSE TO USE IT UNTIL YOU SORT
EVERY COMMENT OUT AND PROVIDE FIGURES OF TEST RESULTS.

How is that different from calling someones idea f-words?
Does it have the same effect as the f-words?
Only that it doesn't trigger your email f-word filter.

You do have a point from perspective of 'I write the code for the
company, and my contribution is copyrighted/owned by the company too,
but someone may read the history and get a bad idea of my professionalism,
if emails to me/from me are seen containing f-word filter triggers
or if someone in HR reading it thinks that I'm being bullied here'.

Well as philosophers say, sometimes everything has to change, for
everything to remain the same. (others call it 'churn')

I second the request to 'cut down a bit on uncontrolled cursing'
(for benefit of those unfortunate souls with f-word filters
not-under-their-control or HR reading their emails.)
