A good starting point would be to show a diff of the two configuration files. Also make sure you are not running any plugins. Inspect the cookies in your browser at each step to see what's happening with them, since it sounds like you are losing them. The only other thing I can think of at the moment is to check if you have misconfigured the base URL setting.
