thank you for the information! I only found the .mo-files on my ubuntu installation, but converting them to .po and then using poedit worked (after restarting apache).

I just replaced several very long strings for myself, like the image-removed-message, with short strings, don't think it's really useful for production systems.

Just to be sure, updating SquirrelMail with apt will overwrite the files and will have to merge the changes with POEdit again?

Ps: There are strings in compose.php, which were not in the german .mo file. In the code they are written with a colon, in the .mo file only without.
It was "To:" and "Subject:", most probably also "CC:" and "BCC:".
