have you tried to enter the host address in URI format?
That's how I have configured my LDAP access:
$ldap_server[0] = array(
'host' => 'ldaps://my.ldap-server',
'base' => 'ou=xxx,dc=yyy,dc=lan',
'name' => 'Xxxxxxx',
'port' => 636,
'charset' => 'utf-8',
'maxrows' => 150,
'protocol' => 3
);
