If you're gonig to install a NEW package, then you could have also
installed SquirrelMail 1.4.16 (although it requires PHP 4.1.0, but
maybe you should think twice about those other software packages
:-)).  Inquiring for support on a version of SquirrelMail that is over
four years old is a big ask, and it's not surprising you'd have had
problems with it (seems like it had some modifications you made on
your own that may have been breaking it).
