It is not html. SquirrelMail does not support bbcode.

Check SquirrelMail display options and make sure that you have "Show HTML
Version by Default" turned on.

SquirrelMail has three email display modes. Plain text, sanitized html and
stripped html. If you have message with alternative text and html parts,
text part is displayed by default. If you have html only message, html is
removed by default. If "Show HTML Version by Default" is turned on, html
parts take precedence over text ones and html only parts are displayed in
sanitized mode
