Thank you for the reply, Paul.

Should the attachment directory be empty unless a user is sending an
e-mail with an attachment?  Or, should it contain several files?

I'm running 1.4.7-4.fc4 on Fedora Core 4.  This is not a new install. 
It's been running for a couple years now.
