Probably the PHP timeout but I moved to v1.5.1 and I do not have problems opening much larger folders. The question is do you want to put up with a couple of quirks with the v1.5.1 to gain a significant increase in speed. Have not tested this against an Exchange host but I have used IMAP4 with an Exchange host with folders larger than 2500 messages.
